Creed Dusts Off the Dirt and Doubles Down at Road America
X-Games Gold Medal Winner, Sheldon Creed, in first career ARCA Series start on dirt
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., August 25, 2017 (Newswire.com) – This past Sunday, Sheldon Creed made his first ever ARCA Series start on dirt in the Herr’s Potato Chips 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Creed was behind the wheel of the No. 78 United Rentals/A.M. Ortega Construction/RTL Leasing Chevrolet for Mason Mitchell Motorsports. It may have been his first time racing a stock car on dirt, but having won countless championships in off-road trucks and having two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts under his belt, Creed and defending event champions, Mason Mitchell Motorsports, had to be counted among the favorites going into the race.
The race day got off to a great start as Creed topped the time charts in the only practice session, but he was second to go out in the qualifying order. The Springfield Mile clay was still slick and not rubbered up yet, so Creed’s best effort only put him in 6th position on the grid.
As the race began, Creed showed the pace of the United Rentals Chevrolet, quickly moving up to 3rd position, and then overtaking eventual race winner Grant Enfinger, for 2nd place.
Sheldon made his only pit stop during a caution just before the halfway point, and the MMM crew completed a great stop for Creed. During the caution, six drivers stayed on the track, putting Creed back in 8th place. When the race went green again, Creed passed four cars in one lap to move back into the top-five, and eventually raced his way back to 2nd place.
On the final restart, with 18 laps to go, Creed was on the outside of the front row in 2nd position, but he got hung on the outside, off the groove, and eventually dropped back to 7th place. He used the remaining 15 laps to battle his way back up to 4th, but was frustrated despite the great run.
Sheldon Creed on Springfield:
“We had a great race car all day long. Unfortunately, we got stuck on the outside line for a majority of the restarts and if you couldn’t get to the bottom right away you lost spots. We needed the race to go green, since we had a really fast car. We had way too many cautions that never allowed for a lot of green flag racing. I can’t wait to be back with these MMM guys at DuQuoin. They worked hard all day and made great adjustments to our car. We’ll have a great shot to win at DuQuoin.”
Creed’s next event will be this weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where he will again pull double-duty by competing in both the NASCAR Xfinity and Trans Am Series. Creed will return to the Stevens-Miller Racing Speedlogix/United Rentals Dodge for the fourth and final time this season in The Road America Muscle Car Challenge, Trans Am Series race on Saturday, Aug. 26. Sheldon “The Showstopper” Creed will then make his second start of the weekend in the #01 United Rentals/A.M. Ortega Chevrolet Camaro for JD Motorsports, in the Johnsonville 180, on Sunday, Aug. 27.
Sheldon Creed on Road America:
“I’m really looking forward to getting back in the Xfinity and Trans Am cars this weekend, at Road America, since we had good speed in both cars at Mid-Ohio, but various issues kept us from having the finishes we were looking for in each race. Both JD Motorsports and Stevens-Miller racing have made some changes to their cars to suit my driving style and preferences, since Mid-Ohio, so I hope we have a nice smooth weekend and get to show our true potential.”
The Johnsonville 180 NASCAR Xfinity Series race is live on NBC at 3:00 p.m. ET, Sunday, Aug. 27.
The Road America Muscle Car Challenge, Trans Am Series race will take place at 10:20 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 26 and be broadcast on CBSSN on Sept. 20 at 10:00 p.m. ET.
